The monitoring programme measures the actual delivery of offsets on the ground, using reliable methods with results that can be verified independently by any interested party.

The initial calculations of offsets give conservative estimates based on best-available information backed by site-visits. This is followed by a biomass inventory both of the open ground being reforested and of nearby stands of known age. The assumptions used to set the baseline are also rechecked with local data. This information is then used to refine the carbon sequestration estimates.
This process is repeated at regular intervals (3-7 years, as appropriate). At each stage, the extra biomass is measured, actual land use changes are checked against the original, the offsets delivered are counted and the forward projections adjusted accordingly. This continues throughout the project life.
The sites are also checked between full monitoring sessions. The reserves managed by WLT partners are permanently staffed, and representatives of World Land Trust also visit at least annually. Any event – such as a fire – that could compromise the offsets is reported immediately so that remedial action can be taken.
