tree planting

The World Land Trust has an agreement with Scottish and Southern Energy to plant sufficient seedlings in 2006 - 2008 to ensure the existence of 450,000 trees in 10 years time. This programme, undertaken in conjunction with WLT local partners, is in full swing with the following initiatives in place at the halfway point in the programme.

There are two main types, both carried out with local partner organisations:

The plantings all involve native tree species and are designed to extend, buffer and link up forest patches in reserves that contain threatened habitats, thereby supporting important concentrations of endangered species of animals and plants. The types of forest involved include low-altitude Ecuadorian Pacific Slope cloud forest, Andean sub-tropical montane forest, Tumbesian dry forest and Atlantic rainforest - all unique and severely threatened forest ecosystems.

We are also developing mangrove planting initiatives in India and the Philippines.
